In the novel, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, he describes how a woman named Pari wakes up in a hospital from a coma that she had been in for months. She is unable to speak or move and is completely paralyzed. As she lies there, she remembers many different things: her childhood, her family and friends and all of the things that they did and said in the past. She remembers all of these memories in such detail that they seem like actual memories -- like it happened yesterday.

But at the same time these memories are not real; they are only thoughts in her head. When she wakes up from her coma she has no recollection of where she had been or what had happened to her while she was unconscious. This is because the scarring of her brain has made all of those memories non-existent, but when she wakes up from the coma, those memories come flooding back to her.
